Privacy notice
Last updated: 13 October 2026
This notice explains what personal information Bristolians Market collects, why, and your rights. We collect as little as we can and never sell your information.
Who is responsible for your information
[Owner’s full name], trading as Bristolians Market, [Business postal address, Bristol], is the controller of your personal information. Email hello@bristoliansmarket.co.uk with any privacy question. ICO registration number: [ICO registration number].
What we collect
- Account: your email address, the name shown on your ads, your password (stored only in a scrambled form we cannot read), whether you sell as a business and your trading name, and when you joined.
- Listings: what you post, including photos, price and the postcode district. We never show your full address.
- Messages: conversations with other users, and reports and blocks.
- Technical: your IP address, device and browser type, and sign-in times, used for security and to stop abuse.
- Support and moderation: emails you send us, and the decisions our team makes about your listings or account.
Why we use it, and our lawful basis
- To run your account, publish your ads and deliver your messages: to provide the service you signed up for (contract).
- To check listings and messages for scams, banned items and illegal content, to handle reports and to keep the site secure: our legitimate interest in a safe marketplace, and our legal duties under the Online Safety Act 2023.
- To send service emails (email verification, password reset, security notices and moderation decisions): contract and legitimate interest. We do not email you about new messages.
- To send news and offers, only if you ticked the box: consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
- To keep records we are required to keep, such as for tax or when the police lawfully ask: legal obligation.
Automated checks
New listings are screened automatically for banned words, scam patterns and unsuitable images, and may be checked by an AI model that compares them with our rules. Clear breaches can be rejected automatically; everything else is decided by a person. You are always told the reason and can ask a person to review any decision.
Checking new passwords
When you choose a password, your browser checks whether it has appeared in a known data breach using the Pwned Passwords service. Only a short, scrambled fragment is sent, never your password, and the service cannot tell what your password is.
Who we share it with
- Other users see your ads, the name shown on them, your district and when you joined. People you message see your messages.
- Amazon Web Services hosts the site, stores data, sends our emails and runs the automated checks, as our processor. Your data is stored in the UK (London). Some checks may run in AWS data centres in the European Economic Area, which the UK recognises as giving adequate protection.
- The police or other authorities, when the law requires it or to prevent fraud or harm.
How long we keep it
- Account and listings: while your account is open. Closed accounts are deleted 30 days after closure.
- Messages: while either person’s account is open, and up to 30 days after both have closed.
- Reports and moderation decisions: up to 2 years, to deal with appeals and repeat abuse.
- Security logs: up to 90 days.
- Records of paid adverts: 6 years, as tax law requires.
Cookies and storage on your device

- get a copy of your information (you can download it from your account);
- have it corrected or deleted;
- object to or restrict how we use it;
